5 architectural design trends for 2020

We’re poised at the start of a new decade for design. So what will the big architectural trends be in 2020? We’ve rounded up some tips from top architecture and design publications!

#1 Sustainable design

We heard a lot in 2019 about carbon-neutral and eco-friendly homes. This trend will continue to dominate architecture, including better insulation, natural materials, and more local sourcing.

The focus on nature will affect design trends, too. Look out for plant motifs on textiles, wallpaper, and tiles.

#2 Neutrals take the stage

Back in 2019, we saw a lot of vivid colors and precious metals. 1980s glamor made a big comeback!

But in 2020, we’re dialling it down. Rich, calming neutral shades are set to be popular. We’re thinking complex beiges, soft rose tones, and natural greys.

#3 Subtle luxuries

In recent years, we’ve taken a lot of inspiration from minimalist cultures. Marie Kondo’s Japanese attitude to culture has taken over the world, while Scandinavian hygge and eco-friendly design are growing in popularity. We expect to see home designs which are luxurious and cozy, but without fuss.

#4 Better, more beautiful storage

More people are choosing to live in smaller spaces. We might not be ready for a tiny house, but designing efficient spaces is definitely on the agenda in 2020. According to Architectural Digest, designers are getting into “beautiful storage”. It’s time to maximize your space and your style.

#5 The new Art Deco

At long last, geometric patterns are back in style. Watch out for rectangular, circle and stripe motifs in exciting colorways. If the trend for neutrals leaves you cold, then this is the design movement to follow.
